Helen Hufendick, of Owatonna, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Saturday, March 30, 2013 from breast and abdominal cancer in the Homestead Hospice House. She was 93. Helen was born February 19, 1920 in California, Missouri the daughter of Walter and Cordelia (Hess) Rohrbach. Helen was married to Harold Hufendick, also of Missouri, on July 4, 1938. Helen and Harold lived in Washington D.C. where she worked for the Chief of Finance for the War Bond Department. Following Harold's service in WWII, they lived in Greenbelt, Maryland where Helen was Administrative Secretary for Engineering Research, Riverdale, Maryland. From 1965 to 1973 she was Administrative Secretary for the Central Atlantic Conference of the United Church of Christ (UCC) in Silver Spring, Maryland. Later to moving to Minnesota, Helen and Harold became members of the Associated Church in Owatonna. Helen served on the Committees of the Southern Association and Minnesota Conference of the UCC. Helen was named one of the outstanding Leaders at the 1985 UCC General Synod in Ames, Iowa. Helen served as the President of the Minnesota Council of Churches as well as serving on many other committees. She was an active member of Church Women United and on May 8, 1999 was presented with the Valiant Woman Award for her leadership. In 2005, Helen was honored as Steele County (Minnesota) Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year. Helen is the mother of four children: Sondra Stripling of Silver Spring, Maryland, Jacqueline Gilbert (deceased) of Silver Spring, Maryland, Ronald Hufendick (Kim) of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Steven Hufendick (Sharlene) of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Helen is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, a sister Shirley Ball, of California, Missouri, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold (1995), two sisters and one brother, and her daughter Jacqueline (2007). Helen was strong in her Christian faith. Her love of her family will never be forgotten. Her dedicated service to church, humanity and community will be greatly missed. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the church. Memorial services will be held Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 11:00 AM at The Associated Church with Pastor Jim Oberg officiating. Interment will be in the Owatonna Memorial Gardens in Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to Grandparent''s For Education or Owatonna Home Care and Hospice.
