Obituary

Helen Janice Kvittem, 91, of Wanamingo, died Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at The Gardens at Cannon Falls, Minnesota Helen was born February 26, 1925 in rural Cannon Falls, Minnesota the daughter of Clarence and Edna (Wagner) Flom. She was baptized and confirmed at Urland Lutheran Church. Her father died when she was young and her mother married Arthur Otterness. She grew up in rural Cannon Falls where she attended country school and graduated from Cannon Falls High School. She received her education for teaching and taught in a one room school house in the Aspelund area for five years. Helen moved to Rochester to work for the Mayo brothers as an administrative assistant at the Mayo Clinic. Helen was united in marriage to John Kvittem on September 15, 1951 at Urland Lutheran Church in rural Cannon Falls and was blessed with 60 years of marriage. They farmed in Cherry Grove Township for many years. Helen was a loving wife and mother. She stayed home to raise their three children and help with farm work. Helen enjoyed square dancing, sewing and quilting, traveling, watching the Minnesota Twins, and playing cards, especially Rook. Helen was an active member of Dale Lutheran Church including; financial secretary for over 40 years, church custodian, WELCA, and circle. She was a 4-H Club Leader, served on the Goodhue County Extension board, and chapter leader for Goodhue County Thrivent. Helen is survived by her three children, Barb (Dale) Kvittem-Barr of Peoria, Arizona, Bruce (Barb) Kvittem of Kenyon, Judy Miller of Sogn Valley and foreign exchange daughter Ronny Gomez of Costa Rica, five grandchildren Jared (Kelly) Miller, Josh (Tonya) Miller and Luke (Kelly) Miller, Mikayla Kvittem-Barr and Brittany Kvittem-Barr; seven great-grandchildren Rylann, Kolton, Brynn, Jackson, Tate, Gavin, and Griffin. She is also survived by her brother, Arnold (Jesse) Otterness of rural Cannon Falls; sister-in-law, Frankie Flom of rural Cannon Falls; two step granddaughters; Vicky Shorter and Becky Krahn; five step great-grandchildren, Nicole, Lacy, Cody, Hunter, and Cash. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; brother, Eldridge Flom; and son-in-law, Alan Miller. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon on Friday, January 13, 2017 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and at Dale Lutheran Church on Saturday from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Dale Lutheran Church with The Reverend Heather Culuris officiating. Interment will be in the Dale Lutheran Church Cemetery.
