Hilman A. Berg, 80, of Kenyon, died Friday, November 7, 2008 at Kenyon Sunset Home of Alzheimer''s. He was born November 21, 1927 in Wanamingo Township in Goodhue County the son of Ole and Bertha (Krogh) Berg. He was baptized, confirmed and a lifelong member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Aspelund. Hilman graduated from country school after which time he helped on the family farm. As a young man Hilman also worked for neighboring farmers, Selmer Foss and Art Anfinson. In the late 1940's, Hilman worked for Henry Barsness shelling and hauling corn at farms throughout Goodhue County. In 1952, at the age of 25, Hilman took over the operation of the family farm due to his father's declining health. In 1960, after the death of his father, Hilman then cared for his mother until her death in 1969. Over the years family members would help Hilman, but it was his brother, Alvin and Alvin's son, Gary, who continued to help with fieldwork and milking on weekends and summers. Hilman was able to instill his love of farming to his nephew Gary and for many years they farmed together. At the age of 65, Hilman sadly sold his dairy cows due to chronic back problems, but he continued to do fieldwork for several more years. He always kept busy on the farm. On October 31, 2003, Hilman suffered a heart attack and required major heart surgery. He then became a resident of the Kenyon Sunset Home. Hilman loved his dairy cattle and was an excellent dairyman. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbors and relatives. He enjoyed playing cards, visiting with friends and family, tractor and horse pulling contest, watching the 4H livestock shows at the county and state fair and Sunday dinners at his sister Agnes' home. He is survived by sister, Agnes Aase of Kenyon and her family, Bonnie (and Ed) Roach of Kenyon, special nephew Gary (and Tamra) Berg of Kenyon, sister-in-laws, Eloyce Berg of Kenyon and Shirley Berg of Roseville.
