Irene Carol Curtis, 88, of Kenyon, formerly of Claremont, died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. She was born September 12, 1922 in Osakis the daughter of Ilot and Ella (Knutson) Erickson. At a young age, Irene''s mother preceded her in death and she was raised by her dad and step mom, Bertha. Irene graduated from Osakis High School. She then worked as a bookkeeper at the original Herberger's store. She married Allen W. Curtis June 6, 1944. The couple lived in rural Long Prairie where they farmed together until moving to the Claremont area in 1964. While living in Claremont she was personal assistant and cleaned for Mr. Mrs. Jim McMartin. She was a member of the Methodist Church near Long Prairie where she taught Sunday School and Bible School. Irene was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Claremont. She was a member of the Eagle's Club in Owatonna. She volunteered to deliver meals on wheels and served as an election judge and census official. Irene enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, and needlework. She attended many auctions and flea markets with her husband. She loved visiting with her family and friends on her front porch and always had homemade cookies and coffee ready to serve her company. Irene held dear the time spent with her grandchildren. She is survived by son, Dennis (and Anne) Curtis of Elko, NV; daughter, Linda (and Dennis) Urness of Kenyon; grandchildren, Emily Urness, Andrew Urness, Allen (and Raelynn) Curtis; great grandchildren, Caleb Curtis and Harley-Rose Curtis; sister, Janet Westlund of Osakis and nieces and nephews. Irene was preceded in death by her husband, 2 brothers and 1 nephew. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Sunday from 2pm to 5pm and at First Presbyterian Church, Claremont on Monday from 9:30am to 10:30am. Funeral services will be held August 22, 2011 at 10:30am at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Robert Hamilton officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Claremont.
