Obituary

Iris Lorraine Champion, age 86, of Owatonna, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 13, 2020. Iris was born on August 20, 1933, in Woden, IA, the daughter of Lewis and Ida (Kallem) Nelson. In 1945, Iris moved to Clarkfield where she was raised on a farm by her sister Harriet (Olaf) Tolkheim. She attended Clarkfield High School and graduated in 1953. In school her favorite subjects were English and Music. In her senior class play, Iris sang a solo, "The Loveliest Night of The Year". Her hobbies were horseback riding, listening to Duke Ellington and her favorite actor was Mario Panza. Iris enjoyed apple pie and pork chops. After high school, Iris worked at the Farmer's Elevator. She said her ideal companion would be someone who had a good sense of humor and enjoyed music. In 1956, she was married in El Paso Texas at Biggs Airforce Base to Russell Allen Champion from St. Ansgar, IA. They had had four children. Iris last resided in Owatonna where she worked at Federated Insurance. She is survived by her son, Larry (Leticia) Champion of Portland, TX; daughters, Shawn (Clayt) Stoppel of Rochester, Rhonda (Eric) Erwin of Owatonna; eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Russell who died on February 5, 2007; daughter, Kathy Champion; parents; five brothers and two sisters. There will be a private family funeral service. The interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. The family would like to give a special thanks to all those who loved and cared for Iris, and especially to the staff at Ecumen Brooks in Owatonna where she lived.
