Ivan Elmer Herrlich, 91, of Kenyon died Friday, July 12, 2019, at his home.
Ivan was born on February 17, 1928 in Vernon Center, Minnesota to Elmer and Emma Herrlich. His father died in an auto accident when he was four years old leaving his mother to raise him and his younger sister. The family moved to town and boarded teachers to support the family. At a young age, Ivan contributed to his family by mowing grass and shoveling snow. Emma remarried when Ivan was 13 years old and moved to the Mack farm. Ivan met the love of his life at his new school, Amboy High School. He started farming at 14 years of age with his Grandfather Herrlich and later with Uncle Tom Bowles. During WWII, at 15 years of age, Ivan jumped a train to Montana because he heard there was work out there and later returned to Minnesota. He married Lois Juergens on December 14, 1947. He continued to farm near Lake Crystal and later Mapleton. In 1956, they bought their first farm and moved four children to Kenyon. With his partner, they grew the farm and family in the next 63 years.
Ivan enjoyed farming, family, and life with Lois. During their courtship and marriage, Ivan and Lois enjoyed playing cards, dining and dancing with friends. He loved sharing his passion for farming with his children. Later, Ivan and Lois enjoyed winter vacations to Florida, Texas, and Arizona. Ivan's first love was being on the farm, but if Lois wanted to travel, he loved her even more.
Ivan was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
