James Richard Hines, 75, of Owatonna, died Monday, February 19, 2018 at Birchwood Cottages in Owatonna after a long battle with vascular dementia. He was born April 2, 1942 in Rochester, Minnesota the son of Edward and Lucille (O'Neil) Hines. He served in the US Navy aboard the air craft carrier USS WASP as an aircraft electrician from 1961 thru 1966. He attended MN School of Business, became a computer programmer and began his 42 year career at OTC/SPX. Jim married Karen Utpadel on September 16, 1967 in Rochester. They had 3 children, Brian, Stacy and Michael. Jim loved attending all of the activities of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed restoring his Ford Mustang, creating new flower gardens for his wife and following the Twins and Vikings. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Karen; children, Brian (Paula) Hines of Detroit Lakes, Stacy (Jean-Louis) Gabriel of Tulsa, OK and Michael Hines of Cottage Grove; grandchildren, Jack and Benjamin Hines, Pascal Gabriel, Elisabeth, Andrew and Anthony Hines; brother, Harold (Jona) Hines of Rochester and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Lucille; brothers, Edward and John Hines; brother-in-law, Darald Utpadel; sisters-in-law, Nancy and Karen and much loved dog, Maggy. The family wishes to thank Birchwood Cottages for their excellent care and kindness shown to Jim. Memorials are preferred to Donors Choice. A Memorial Service will be held at Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna on Monday, February 26, 2018 at 1:00 PM with Fr. Stephen Abaukaka officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at a later date. Military honors will be conducted by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Memorials are preferred to the donor's choice.
