James Martin Olander, 87, of Summerlin, NV, died Thursday, August 2, 2018 at TLC Care Center Henderson, NV. He was born July 5, 1931 in Waseca the son of Gordon and Betty (Paulson) Olander. Jim played trumpet in a swing band as a young man and enjoyed big band music his entire life. Jim graduated from Faribault High School in 1949. His high school golf team won the Minnesota State High School championship and this began his life long passion for the great game of golf. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1953, where he attended on a Navy ROTC scholarship. He honorably served in the United States Marine Corps spending time in Korea. He married Patricia Gunderman on June 14, 1958 in Owatonna. The couple lived in Owatonna where he worked for Federated Mutual and later Farmers Insurance, retiring in 1993. He raised his family in Owatonna and was a member of the original Owatonna Golf Commission that developed what is now Brooktree Golf Course, one of the finest public courses in Minnesota. He was able to play and enjoy the game until he was 86. He won several Owatonna club championships and other southern Minnesota tournaments over the years; and was one of the better amateur players in the state. He made seven holes-in one and shot his age many times. Normal Olander dinner table talk usually consisted of his son's sporting events or golf related topics. He enjoyed attending nearly every game or event in which his sons participated, of which there were many. After retirement, he moved to Las Vegas area where he could avoid Minnesota winters and golf nearly every day. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Olander of Owatonna; son, Joel Olander of Owatonna, Brett (and Mary) Olander of St. Paul; grandchildren, Brittany (and Ian), Katie, Bryan, William, and Harris and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanne Ellerbusch. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Thursday, August 23rd from 1pm to 2pm. Memorial services will be held Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 2pm at Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna with Reverend Coqui Conkey officiating.
