Jan Huibert Boers, 85, of Owatonna, died Sunday, July 18, 2010 at the Owatonna Homestead Hospice House. Jan was born October 30, 1924 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, the son of Arie and Alberta Maria Cornelia (Schilthuizen) Boers. Jan attended college in the Netherlands where he received his Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was united in marriage to Maria 'Riet' Jansen on May 11, 1949 in the Netherlands, where they lived until immigrating to the United States in March 1957. Jan worked for the Owatonna Tool Company and was instrumental in the development of the company''s hydraulic products, eventually becoming the Director of Design Engineering. Jan retired from OTC in 1990. After retirement, he became active in the design aspects of Born Again Restorations working on vintage aircraft. Jan was a member of the Owatonna Country Club and the Elks Club. He also enjoyed bowling and traveling throughout the US, Mexico and Europe. Being an engineer, he was passionate about anything technical or mechanical. He loved to know how everything worked and took every opportunity to read about, repair and tinker with the things that made up the modern world. This stayed with him long after his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Riet Boers, of Owatonna; daughter, Betti (and Tom) Maloney of Prior Lake; son, Arie 'Aadje' Boers of Plymouth; two sisters, Lena Hofman of Eindhoven, Netherlands; Rika Schilthuizen of Rotterdam, Netherlands; seven grandchildren, Eric (and Miriam) Jacobson of San Diego, CA; Saskia Jacobson of Missoula, MT; Colleen Maloney of Minneapolis; Catie Maloney of Minneapolis; Kara (and Justin) Codington of Plymouth; Jessica (and John) Paine of Minneapolis; Lindsey Boers of Phoenix, AZ; and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 12:00 PM at Michaelson Funeral Home with Kathy Diedrich celebrating Jan''s life. Interment will be held at a later date at St. John Cemetery in Owatonna.
