Obituary

Jane Tyler Lanier was born March 10, 1936, to William and Leila (Terry) Lanier in Jacksonville, Florida. At 80, she died October 2 at Rice County District One Hospital in Faribault, Minnesota. She was the youngest of five children. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Buckner and Terry; and sisters Dorothy and Virginia. She is survived by her husband, Allan, sons Douglas (Barbara) and Thomas (Nancy) of Kenyon; son Craig (Lee) of Orlando, Florida; daughter Carolyn (Jared) of Seattle, Washington; son David (Jacob) of Washington, D.C., and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jane attended school in Jacksonville until the age of 14, when she moved to Kenyon to live with her guardian parents, Lydia and John Wallaker. She lost her father at age 12 and her mother at age 14. Jane often reflected on the abrupt change from Florida to Minnesota as an early teen, but she adapted well to Kenyon, building many life-long friendships. She attended First Lutheran Church, where she and Allan were married and she sang in the choir. It's also where all five children were baptized, confirmed and attended Sunday School. After high school, Jane went back to her roots in Jacksonville to earn her Registered Nurse degree from St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing. She had met Allan prior to going back to Florida and a pen pal courtship ensued. Jane and Allan married on February 16, 1958 and raised their five children on the family farm west of Kenyon. Jane worked as a nurse at Rice County District One Hospital from 1958 to 1994. It was a career that was a true and natural calling in her life. She also volunteered with Faribault Area Hospice and delivered meals on wheels in Kenyon. She loved to visit and play games with residents of the Kenyon Sunset Home, where she spent the final months of her life. Jane cherished her many car trips with Allan. Naturally, her favorite destination was Florida, where she loved to visit her relatives and attend nursing school reunions. She also found great joy in visiting her children in various places around the country. While she was not as worldly in her travels as Allan, she traversed North America from the Florida Keys to the vistas of Alaska and Hawaiian volcanoes to New England's rocky shores. However, home was Jane's favorite place. She was a natural homemaker and mother, insisting that the whole family gather around the table to eat homemade, nutritious and balanced meals on time. She loved flower and vegetable gardening, cooking, baking and canning fresh fruits and vegetables. Jane was lucky to have her four grandchildren as neighbors. She loved to babysit them when young and she cherished them into their adulthood. She loved crossword puzzles, word games, movies and the instinctive behavior of housecats. Jane was a music lover, especially fond of classical piano music. She savored listening to the talents of her children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Family members will perform in her honor during a service at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 5, at First Lutheran Church, Kenyon, to celebrate Jane's wonderful life. The family asks that contributions be made to Faribault Area Hospice. Visitation: 11/05/2016 13:00 11/05/2016 14:00 Service: 11/05/2016 14:00
