Janice Marie Gunhus, 75, of Kenyon, died Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at The Gardens at Cannon Falls. She was born May 28, 1942 in Little Falls, Minnesota the daughter of William and Esther (Haag) Farrier. She grew up in the Lexington / Circle Pines area of the Twin Cities. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. When the family moved to North Minneapolis, Janice attended and graduated from Edison High School in 1960. She went on to graduate top in her class at Minnesota School of Business with a secretarial degree. She worked for the Graco Company. On March 30, 1963 she married Paul W. She was an excellent seamstress, sewing many of the family's clothes, Halloween costumes, curtains and quilts. She was a lifetime member of Gol Lutheran Church where she was the church organist, Sunday School Superintendent, choir director, piano player, Christmas program director, church secretary, Ladies Aid president and served on the parish board of education as well as other church committees. Janice was very musically talented and sang solos for many churches in the area (her first solo was at age 13 at her grandfather's funeral). She surprised herself when she landed the role of Bloody Mary in the Kenyon Arts Council's first production, South Pacific. She went on to be a part of every musical production for 11 years. During that time, she served as the Kenyon Arts Council President and got many in the community involved in music and theater and behind the scenes. Janice was a member of the singing group, Sweet Adelines, Faribault Chapter. While in that group she traveled to Canada to perform. She also brought together a trio singing group consisting of herself, Bev Hogy and Alice Quaale. They sang at many functions in the community for a number of years. Janice also used her talents to teach piano lessons to many children in the community as well as trained children to sing. When her children were all in school, Janice went back to work first in the advertising department at Foldcraft in Kenyon and then as a type setter and proof reader at the Northfield News in Northfield. She held strong Christian values and knew the Bible well, often reading and studying on her own. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, playing card games and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Paul Gunhus of Kenyon; children, Gunder Gunhus of Red Wing, Cindy Gunhus of Kenyon, Chet (Lisa) Gunhus of Carver and Kari Gunhus of Zumbrota; grandchildren, Adam, Benjamin and Hannah Gunhus, Jenna Gunhus-Otterness, Maren Benson and Leif, Cooper and Charlotte Gunhus; daughter-in-law, Darcy Gunhus of Redwing; aunt, Alice Fogelquist of International Falls and many nieces and nephews.
