Janice Sathrum, age 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 4th at Reflections-
End of Life Care in Northfield.
Janice was born at home in Dodge County, MN on January 11, 1927 to Ruth
(Lehnherr) and Walter Buehler. After attending Normal Teachers Training in Cannon
Falls, MN, Janice began her teaching career at the Concord, MN country school. In
September 1949 Janice married Howard Sathrum and they built a life together on the
Sathrum family farm. Janice taught in District 11 south of West Concord, but spent
most of her career at the West Concord Elementary School. Teaching children to read
gave Janice a special joy. She was devoted to teaching and students, many of her
students becoming lifelong friends.
Janice was a woman of many passions. She loved her farm. When she was widowed
at an early age, she stayed on the farm and worked hard to see it prosper. After
retirement Janice's enthusiasm for bicycling and adventure led to biking trips all over
the world, often accompanied by grandchildren. Janice's travels, not on bicycle, took
her to many other places in the world. Janice was an avid seamstress whose multitude
of beautiful quilts were gifted to her family as well as to charities. She loved
gardening, birds, dogs and wolves. Her favorite place in the world was the woods
behind her home farm where she spent many joyous hours as a child. She loved
taking her children and grandchildren to the woods to learn about wildflowers and to
fish in the creek. The arts were very important to Janice. She enjoyed playing the
piano and painting and was excited to support any of her children and grandchildren in
artistic endeavors. Janice was endlessly optimistic with a can-do attitude and loved to
laugh. She was raised to work hard and she was a master at it. Life threw Janice
some curves, but she accepted them with grace and surmounted the obstacles.
Janice was a seeker of truth and meaning and read voraciously. She relished her
friends and the escapades she enjoyed with her quilters group and her Normal School
classmates. Janice enjoyed volunteering at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester and at the
West Concord Historical Society. She was a past member of the West Concord Study
Club.
Janice loved her family and spending time with them always put a smile on her face.
Janice will be greatly missed by her children, Colleen (Greg) Hayne of West Concord,
Christine (Vic) Rosenthal of St. Paul, and David (Charlene) Sathrum of Vancouver, WA.;
grandchildren Tim Betts, Rebekah (Kim) Chu, Rachel (Philip) Ridgeway, Aaron
(Florencia) Rosenthal, Ben (Megan) Rosenthal, John Sathrum, and Leah Sathrum,
seven great-grandchildren, Eliora, Harper, Henry, Jessie, Joshua, Naomi and Tali; and
brother, Jim (Phyllis) Buehler. Janice was preceded in death by her parents, her sister
Jeanne, and her husband, Howard. The devotion of Janice's friends has been much
appreciated. Incalculable gratitude is extended to Carmen Breyer, Janice's
longstanding loving and caring hospice nurse.
Janice's family invites you to join them in a Celebration of Janice's life on Sunday, July 7th at the West Concord Historical Society, 600 West 1st Street, West Concord, MN. The gathering will begin at 3pm, with reflections in honor of Janice at 3:30pm. All are invited to stay for a light supper following the sharing of remembrances.
