Obituary

Jerold M. Young, 92, died Thursday, October 23, 2014 at St. Lucas Care Center in Faribault, Minnesota. He had been battling prostate cancer with the wonderful care from St. Croix Hospice and St. Lucas. He was born June 5, 1922 in Banner County, Nebraska the son of Joseph and Myrl (Coons) Young. He grew up in Gering, Nebraska. He went to work at a young age and worked at the railroad until WWII when he joined the Marine Corp. After the war, he worked at the Mayo Clinic for many years until his retirement. Jerry kept busy planting flowers and pruning his many fruit trees and grape plants. He raised doves and had koi fish and german shepherd dogs in his younger days and smaller dogs in his later years. He loved nature and the outdoors. He enjoyed working out in his yard seeing the rabbits, birds, and other animals that would come around out there as well as enjoying all of his flowers. He also loved taking trips to the casino with his friends and dancing and teaching other people to dance. He loved to travel especially all over the US and to Mexico. He enjoyed taking friends to Guadalajara, being their tour guide and showing them the best places to see and eat. Jerold was a lifetime member of the VFW. He is survived by his nieces, Lana Young of Owatonna, Sherry Pottorff of Minatare, NE, and Carolann Rau of Gering, NE; nephews, Joe Young, Jerry Young, Joel Young, Monte Young, Rocky Young, Denny Young, Steve Young, Dirk Young, and Kevin Young; brother, Robert Bob Young; sister-in-law, Emily Young. He is also survived by special friends, Jane Komidor, Rodney Dowe, Jean Dewitz, Terry Throndson, Joanie Stahmann, Rafael Murillo and David McConkey. He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, five brothers, and a special aunt. Jerry will be greatly missed by all of his friends and loved ones. Jerry will be laid to rest next to his father in the family plot at the Gering Cemetery in Gering, Nebraska. Michaelson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
