Obituary

Jerome "Jerry" Joseph Kubista, 93, of Owatonna, died Friday, August 30, 2019 at Whispering Oak Assisted Living in Ellendale. He was born February 11, 1926 in Owatonna, Minnesota the son of Walter and Agnes (Skalicky) Kubista. Jerome graduated from Owatonna High School. He attended Mankato Vocational School for two years and Boiler Engineering School in Owatonna for 6 months. He married Annette Arlene Sommer on December 30, 1947 at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Owatonna. In their union they had ten children. He worked at Star Cleaners and G & K Cleaners for 25 years. He also worked for C & S Coffee Service for 5 years. Jerome volunteered for Meals on Wheels and he sold Watkins for 37 years. Jerome and Annette enjoyed traveling and visited 40 states. He was a Scout Leader for 8 years and belonged to several study clubs and card clubs. He was a member of the Eagles #1791 for 47 years, and was PW.P.2, and Fifth District Secretary for 32 years and past District President. He served on the Eagle Ritual Team for 20 years, Eagles Memorial Team for 18 years, Eagles Memorial Funeral Team for 30 years, and proudly served on the Eagles Cancer Fund Chair for 30 years. In 2002, he was Eagles Midwest Cancer Chairman in charge of 11 states and has served with the District Eagles Cancer Telethon over 40 years. He received several recognitions, 1978 Owatonna Eagle of the Year, Fifth District Eagle of the Year, and State Eagle of the Year. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and served as an usher for 18 years. He is survived by his children, Michael (and Sherry) Kubista of Owatonna, Julie Kubista of Faribault, Mark (and Tammy) Kubista of Mankato, Kari Sletten of Owatonna, Laurie (and Bob) Evenson of Owatonna, Dennis (and Karyn) Kubista of Owatonna and Daniel (and Sandie) Kubista of Owatonna; siblings, Dorothy Gross of Owatonna and Judith Staley of Owatonna; 26 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-granddaughters and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Agnes; wife, Annette Kubista; daughters, Denise Kubista and Jolene Kennedy; son, David Kubista; son-in-law, Allan Sletten; brothers, Bernard Kubista and Cyril Kubista; an infant grandson and an infant granddaughter. Visitation will be held at Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna on Wednesday, September 4th from 5-8pm and at St. Joseph's Catholic Church one hour prior to Mass. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, September 5, 2019 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father James Starasinich officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Eagles Cancer Fund or Homestead Hospice House.
