Joan E. Giese, 79, of Owatonna, died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Homestead Hospice House. Joan was born May 25, 1930 in Heil, North Dakota the daughter of Hayden and Ella (Schultz) Sebastian. Joan was raised and attended school in Elgin, ND graduating from Elgin High School in 1948. She then taught country school in North Dakota. Joan was united in marriage to Wilbert Giese on July 23, 1950 in Elgin. They made their home in Bismarck before moving to Owatonna in 1967. She was a homemaker before being employed for the Owatonna High School where she worked as a secretary for over 10 years. Joan volunteered at Senior Place and was a member at Trinity Lutheran Church. She also was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Legion Auxiliary and the Eagles Auxiliary. Joan enjoyed gardening and refinishing furniture. She is survived by her husband Wilbert Giese of Owatonna; son, Bill (and Denise) Giese of Grand Rapids; daughter, Londa (and David) Johnson of Hayfield; three sisters, Mildred (and August) Heyne of Bismarck; Laura Ketterling of Bismarck; Lucille Nagel of Elgin. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Zachary, Madison, Alexis, Danica Giese and Casey and Amanda Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Monday, June 22, 2009 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church with The Reverend Julie Malone officiating. Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery in Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to the Trinity Lutheran Church Bus Fund, the Homestead Hospice Patient Care Fund or donor''s choice.
