John Edward Hallenberger, 81, of Owatonna, died Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at Homestead Hospice House. He was born August 17, 1926 in Red Wing the son of Martin 'M.S.' and Irene (Nelson) Hallenberger. John served in the US Navy from 1944-1947. He was a Signalman 3rd class aboard the CVE110USS Salerno Bay. John married Elaine Klecker June 6, 1948 at St. John Lutheran Church in Owatonna. He worked for Federated Insurance and Iowa National Insurance as a payroll auditor prior to working for Steele County. He was the Steele County Auditor from 1963-1990. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served as the receiving treasurer and was an usher. He was a member of the American Legion, Elk's Club and Masonic Lodge. He was a board member of the Minnesota Counties Insurance Trust Board, President of the Twin City Payroll Auditors Association, Treasurer of the Escort Carrier Sailors and Airmen Association, Commander of VFW #3723, District Commander and State Athletic Director for the VFW, and Treasurer for the St. John Cemetery Board. John was active in Little Theater of Owatonna. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting and fishing. He loved Big Band music. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Hallenberger of Owatonna; daughters, Nancy (and special friend Del Jones) Hallenberger of Owatonna, Susan Hallenberger of Denver, CO, Jill Hallenberger of Vadnais Heights; sister-in-law, Mary Hallenberger of Frontenac; nephews, David (and Margaret) Hallenberger of Inver Grove Heights, Paul (and Amy) Hallenberger of Red Wing and grandnephew, Kevin Hallenberger. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and an infant son.
