Obituary

John Lowell Ring, 90, of Owatonna, died Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at Cedarview Care Center. He was born November 19, 1920 near Sogn Valley, Goodhue Co, Minnesota the son of Joseph and Irene (Johnson) Ring. He attended Zumbrota High School and graduated in 1938. He then served in the U.S. Army during WWII as Captain and served in France for DDay. He then was active in the National Guard until he was reactivated for the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Lois Hammer on September 12, 1942 at the United Methodist Church in Zumbrota. After several attempts at farming they moved to Medford and Lowell worked at Wenger Corporation. In 1973, they moved to Owatonna and he retired from Wenger in 1985. He then returned to Wenger part-time for the next several years. Lowell also attended Austin Community College in his later years and earned an Associated Arts Degree in Creative Writing. While at Wenger he wrote a column in their newspaper, Rings Ramblings. He was also a great storyteller and drawer. He involved himself in Community Theatre where he built sets and sang. Lowell loved to work with his hands and he mastered the skill of woodcarving. He also loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, skiing, boating, fishing and tending to his vegetable garden. He was a member of Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church and Veterans of Foreign War Post # 3723. He is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Lois Ring of Owatonna; daughters, Dian Norby-Vinion (and Marvin) of Missoula, MT, Rebecca Louise Ring of Monterey Bay, CA; son, John Lowell Ring II (and Karen) of Victorville, CA; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; brother, Walter (and Joann) Ring of Zumbrota; sister, Ruby Magnuson of Cannon Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Peter, brother, Arnold and sister, Marcella Swanson. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Saturday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and at Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church on Sunday from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM . Funeral services will be also be held Sunday December 12, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church with The Reverend Thomas Smith officiating. Interment will be held 2:00 PM Monday at Riverside Cemetery in Medford with military honors by Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Memorials may be given to donor''s choice.
