The memorial service originally planned for Sunday, June 21st has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus. June Marcella Nelson, 96, of Owatonna, Minnesota passed away peacefully on February 14, 2020, at her home in the Traditions of Owatonna 2 Care facility. June's family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the Traditions staff, and to Brighton Hospice for the excellent care given to their mother. Born in Jasper, MN in 1923, June and her five brothers grew up on their family farm. She graduated from Jasper High School in 1941 and continued her education at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato for one year and then attended Nettleton Business College for one year. In 1947, June married her sweetheart Kenneth Nelson. They moved to the Nelson family farm, five miles from Jasper, where they raised six children. In 1982, they retired from farming and for several years, enjoyed the winters in Texas. June loved to laugh. She was loved by all who knew her for her positive attitude, her acceptance of all, and her ready smile. She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed playing bridge, sewing and crocheting. June loved music. She played piano and taught lessons for many years. June was a kind friend to many and always saw the good in others. Her family will miss her greatly and she is survived by her daughter Shirley (David) Luke, Reno, NV, daughter Peggy (Dick) Cahoon, Owatonna, MN, son Jim Nelson, Renton, WA, daughter Sue (Chris) Tjapkes, Michigan, son Rick (Vangie) Nelson, Jefferson City, MO and by eleven grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Ken Nelson, her son David, as well as her parents, her brothers, and their wives. Due to COVID-19, the family will be having a private burial in the Jasper Cemetery in Jasper, Minnesota. No other services will be held.
