Katherine C. Slater, 95, of West Concord, Minnesota died Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at the Kenyon Sunset Home in Kenyon, Minnnesota. Katherine Chistine Rasmusson was born October 21, 1918 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was adopted into the loving arms of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Rasmusson and raised in Astoria, South Dakota. She graduated from high school and married William Gilbert. They raised a family in Miranda, South Dakota where William was a Station Agent for the railroad. Mr. Gilbert passed away in 1957 leaving Katherine with a young family to raise. She was appointed Post Master of Miranda and worked over 30 years. Through her hard work and diligence, she held many offices including President of National Post Master Association for the State of South Dakota and also served on the National Board of the Post Master Association in charge of District 5. She later married Melvin Slater. They enjoyed over 30 years together. Katherine spent many winters in San Diego with her daughter and in 2001 began spending her winters in West Concord with her son, Al. In 2007, Katherine moved to West Concord to reside with Al and Rita. Katherine enjoyed traveling. She made many trip in the states and abroad. She loved to cook and entertain, cutting out recipes until the end. Her coffee pot was always on and goodies ready to serve. She always made you feel welcome. She was a member and played the organ for 60 years at the Miranda Methodist Church in South Dakota. She is survived by her son, Al (and Rita) Gilbert of West Concord, MN; four grandchildren, Mitch (and Judy) Hinman, Kari Wallick, Bill (and Jennifer) Gilbert and Annette (and Rob) Drieslein; twelve great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, William and Melvin, son, Charles Gilbert, daughter, Chandra (Gilbert) Hinman, and sister, Muriel Johnson. Visitation will be at United Methodist Church, West Concord on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11:00 AM at United Methodist Church, West Concord with The Reverend Dave Westlake officiating. Interment will be in the Miranda Cemetery in Miranda, South Dakota on July 5, 2014. Michaelson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
