Obituary

Kathryne 'Kay' C. Standish, 91, of Owatonna, died Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at the Owatonna Hospital. She was born February 1, 1920 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin the daughter of Howard and Alice (Weaver) Stein in her Grandmother Stein's house. She graduated from Shorewood High School in 1937 and attended Milwaukee State Teacher's College, graduating in 1941. Kay's first teaching job was in Richland Center, WI where she met her husband Gordon Standish and the couple was married on March 10, 1946 at Kenwood Methodist Church in Milwaukee. After marriage the couple moved to Mauston, where she taught kindergarten for two years before the birth of son Allan. The family was then transferred to Milwaukee in 1952 and daughter Sally was born there in 1955. In 1962 the family was transferred to Owatonna where Gordon worked for Midland Cooperative. Gordon died suddenly in December of 1964, and instead of returning to Milwaukee, Kay took a position teaching kindergarten at McKinley School. Previous to that she had started the Nursery School at Associated Church and was their first teacher. Kay taught at McKinley School from 1965 until retiring in 1982. Kay was born into a very musical family. Her father was a professional musician, so music has always been a big part of her life. As a child she was given piano and dance lessons, and later voice lessons. She loved sports especially golf and swimming and was an avid T.V. sports watcher. She loved knitting, bridge, theater, and concerts. Her out of home activities included singing in the church choir, playing in the bell choir, and volunteering in the church office. Kay also sang in the community choir, and was a member of a group called the 'Dancin Grandmas." In her later years she taught line dancing and directed a small group of singers called the Golden Tones at Senior Place, and she also did some tutoring at the Adult Learning Center teaching English as a second language. In October of 2002 she sold her house and moved into Morehouse Place, where she made many new friends, played a lot of bridge and was very active on the social committee. She is survived by her children Sally (and Brian) Anderson of Faribault, son, Allan (and Anita) Standish of Anchorage, two grandsons and a great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Gordon. Visitation will be at the United Methodist Church on Tuesday March 1, 2011from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
