Kay F. Merritt, 81, of Medford, died Tuesday, November 24, 2020, Timberdale Trace in Owatonna.
She was born April 20, 1939, in Owatonna, the daughter of Frank and Lena (Jones) Woodfill. Kay graduated from Medford High School in the Class of 1957. On June 15, 1958, she married Loyal "Pat" Merritt at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Medford. Kay worked for 27 years at Medford Public School as a classroom aide, lunch aide and recess monitor. For decades Kay accompanied numerous elementary and high school concerts; as well as vocal and instrumental solos at contests. She was always involved with the high school musicals as she sewed costumes, helped with the sets and accompanied on the piano. She retired in 2001, but continued to sub and play piano for school functions.
Kay was an active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Medford. She started playing organ at the church at age 15 and continued for the next 60 years. She played for weddings, funerals, choirs, and children's plays and concerts; along with sewing costumes. She crafted and sewed many items for the Steele County Fair booth; including organizing volunteers and setting up the booth. She also led the youth group and was involved in the many strawberry festivals and chicken suppers.
Kay was active in the community as a member of the Civic Club and with the local pool participating in water aerobics with her friends. She attended many school field trips and hosted great birthday parties for her children and their friends throughout the years.
Kay enjoyed camping with friends and family, scrapbooking, crafting, shopping, traveling, and she never missed a good garage sale as she whipped U-turns and ran over curbs. She especially enjoyed sewing. She created wedding gowns for her daughters and others; including, bridesmaids dresses, flower girl dresses, ring bearer tuxedo and wedding decorations. Kay brought a legacy of music to the town of Medford as she taught piano, organ and guitar for 40 years to local students.
She is survived by her children, April (and Ron) Kubinski of Owatonna, Jay (and Cheryl) Merritt of Medford, Jill (and Curt) Olson of Medford; grandchildren, Amber (and David) Langan, Amanda (and Kenny) Peerboom, Ben Kubinski, Nathan (and Lisa) Kubinski, Jacob Kubinski, Lukas Kubinski, TJ (and Brianna) Merritt, Stephanie Merritt, Cole Olson, Autumn Olson; great grandchildren, Sofia, Trinity, Rurik, Maddie, Jaxton, Milo, Sitrik, Kason.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyal "Pat" Merritt, who died on September 14, 2020 and her parents.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Friday, December 4, 2020, from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM and one hour prior to the service. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 5, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Michaelson Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery in Medford.
