Kenneth Dwane Long, 94, of Owatonna, died Thursday, February 27, 2020 at Medford Senior Care.
He was born January 4, 1926 in Owatonna the son of Owen and Carrie (Quinell) Long. Ken attended District 8 country school in Clinton Falls and graduated from Medford High School in the class of 1943. He served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1947 in the south pacific. Ken witnessed the damage from the atomic bomb as he was a crewman on the first US ship to enter the harbor at Nagasaki, Japan. Later he was a crewman aboard a ship at the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. Ken married Audrey Naumann at Zion Lutheran Church in Lemond Township on June 21, 1950. The couple made their home in Owatonna where Ken was employed by Federated Insurance for 42 years. Ken worked in the accounting department at Federated and was their first computer operator on the first computer in Owatonna.
Ken was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. He served as a Boy Scout Master for over 30 years and received the Silver Beaver award in 1962. He held the position of President for the Federated Employee Club, Oak Hill Cemetery board, SMDPA (Southern Minnesota Data Processors Association), and the Owatonna Reclamation Center, the first such center in Minnesota. Ken enjoyed handy man work, woodworking, camping and fishing. The highlight of his scouting career was seeing his two sons become Eagle Scouts.
He is survived by his sons, Cory (and Susan) Long of Lakeville, Perry (and Michele) Long of New Hope; grandchildren, Joe Jacobson, Ben Long, Jack Long; brother, Dewey (and Gladys) Long; nephews and nieces, Ric Naumann, Curt Naumann, Barb Lueck, Pam Cardinal, Michelle Rysavy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey; brother, Cyrus.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Sunday from 5pm to 7pm and at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Monday from 10am to 11am. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 2, 2020 at 11am at Redeemer Lutheran Church with The Reverend Kirk Griebel officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Clinton Falls. Memorials are preferred to Allina Health Home Care Services (Hospice) Patient Care Fund or to the donor's choice.
