Leland "Johnny" D. Coulter, 86, of Owatonna, died Sunday, January 11, 2009 at Cedarview Care Center. He was born April 14, 1922 in Steele County, Minnesota the son of Guy and Orpha (McGriff) Coulter. He attended school in rural Steele County. Johnny served in the US Army from 1942-1945 in the European Theater with the 702nd Tank Battalion. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the family farm. On September 19, 1946, he married Delores Svenby in Owatonna. In 1969 they moved into Owatonna, where he was employed by Steele-Waseca Co-Op Electric for 19 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he had served as an usher. Johnny was also a past member of the Golden Kiwanis Club and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He enjoyed reading Louis Lamour books, watching wrestling on TV, western movies until his eyesight started to fail, going for drives in the country to check on the crops and playing cards with his children and grandchildren. Johnny enjoyed being with family and friends. He loved chocolate, especially brownies. He was "Grandpa" to several local children. He is survived by his wife Delores of 62 years; daughters, Jeanne Townsend of Rochester; Cheryl (and Tom) Braaten of Missouri City, TX; Sue (and Bernie) Prihoda of Owatonna; Christine (and Richard) Burroughs of Moline, IL; six grandchildren: Karen, Christopher, Amanda, Katie, Benjamin and Adam; three great-grandchildren: Tyler, Emily and Mackenzie; a sister, Ada (and George) Dusek of Owatonna and a brother, Ken (and Sandy) Coulter of Willis, TX; along with many nieces and nephews. Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Thursday, January 15, 2009 from 5- 8PM and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday from 9:30-10:30 AM. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 16, 2009 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church with The Reverend Julie Malone officiating. Interment will be in the Blooming Prairie Cemetery in Blooming Prairie. The VFW and American Legion Honor Squad will perform military rites. Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church or the choice of the donor.
