Leo Wencil Kubat, 78, long time resident of Owatonna, died peacefully Monday, March 24, 2008 surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 24, 1929 in Steele County the son of Victor and Anna (Houdek) Kubat. His parents preceded him in death at a young age at which time Leo resided with the James Polacek, Sr. family. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War as part of the 7th U.S. Calvary in 1950 and 1951 achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. Leo married Shirley Ann Peterson on June 6, 1953 in Owatonna. Together they raised seven children. He farmed near Morristown from 1965 to 1972 and operated Kubat's Tree Service in Owatonna from 1972 to 1987. Leo is survived by his wife, Shirley of Owatonna; sons, Wayne (Marilyn) Kubat of Wasilla, AK, Alan Kubat of Owatonna, Ryan (and Pam) Kubat of Owatonna, Jarl (and Mary) Kubat of Chandler, AZ, Jeff (and fianc Carol Kasper) Kubat of Owatonna; daughters, Anne Kubat (and Bruce) of East Bethel, Rhonda (and Dale) Prestegard of Rochester; brother, Jerome (and Millie) Kubat of Claremont; sister, Rosella (and Howard) Moe of Owatonna and many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Victor, Jr. 'Bud' Kubat; sister, Dorothy Kubat. Leo's laughter was contagious. He finished the race with honor and peace, with his loving family by his side. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4-8 PM and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Thursday from 9-10 AM. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Owatonna Memorial Gardens in Owatonna.
