Leon Edward Avery, 56, of West Concord, died Saturday, April 21, 2018 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester surrounded by his family. He was born February 21, 1962 in Faribault the son of Tom and Maxine (Voxland) Avery. In his youth, Leon operated equipment for his dad's soil conservation and land clearing business. In 1974, at the age of 12, while working with his family crushing cars, Leon branched off to start his own metal recycling endeavor, which led to his future career. Leon graduated from West Concord High School in 1980. He was captain of the West Concord Football Team, Homecoming King and participated in the work study program at Boe Jeep. After high school, he met Deborah Hughes. On October 16, 1982 they were married in Pasadena, CA. The couple made their home in West Concord following their marriage. In 1986, Leon and his wife began L&D Recycling and in 1992 opened the scrapyard in West Concord. Leon was a member of Hope Summit Christian Church. Over the years Leon taught Sunday school at Hope Summit and other churches he attended. Leon was a classic motorcycle enthusiast and collector. He loved to attend auctions, stock car races, drag races in Pomona, CA and county and state fairs. Leon's family always came first. He loved spending time with them. He is survived by daughters, Ashley (and Devon) Larish of Nerstrand, Whitney (and Matthew) Dressel of West Concord; sons, Levi (and Mandy) Avery of West Concord, Dune Avery of West Concord; grandchildren, Braylon, Audrey, Adison and Amelia Larish, Owen, Corbin, Leon, Mark and baby girl Dressel on the way, Ella Avery; siblings, Kent (and Diana) Avery, Iris (and Dale) Neumann, Ross (and Rebecca) Avery, Dean (and Janice) Avery, Beth (and Suzie) Avery, Neal (and Kelly) Avery and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Avery; brothers-in-law, Ross Clark, Gary Hughes; infant grandson, Asher Dressel; infant twin grandchildren, Larish Twins. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, West Concord Chapel on Saturday from 2pm to 6pm and at Hope Summit Christian Church on Sunday from 1pm to 2pm. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 29, 2018 at 2pm at Hope Summit Christian Church with Rev. Aaron Wager officiating. Interment will be in the Concord Cemetery in Concord Township.
