Obituary

Leonard George Wersal, 84, of Owatonna, died Thursday, November 4, 2010 at Rivers Manor Assisted Living in Burnsville, Minnesota. He was born August 18, 1926 in Springfield, Minnesota the son of William and Mary (Roiger) Wersal. After school he worked at home on the farm til the age of 17 then worked for Edel Wing. He was drafted in the United States Army on November 9, 1944 where he served as a mechanic in the European Theatre, Pacific Theatre and Occupational Forces of Japan until his honorable discharge on November 19, 1946. After the service, Leonard returned to Springfield where he worked at home, did farm work for others, then worked for Stenzel Motors. Leonard was married to Dorothy Tomschin on March 27, 1955 in Springfield. In the fall of 1956, they moved to Owatonna where Leonard worked as a mechanic at Hursh Motors then as a automotive machinist at Elde''s Auto Parts. Leonard later purchased the machine shop and started Wersal Automotive Machine and retired in 1992. Dorothy died August 2005 at which time Leonard made a special memorial to her that rests below the windmill at Hospice Homestead House in Owatonna. Leonard loved his family and granddaughters. He also loved to work and fix things. He restored tractors, enjoyed woodworking, and his tin man creations can be seen displayed throughout the area. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards and traveling, which included trips to Hawaii, and Germany. Leonard is survived by his daughter, Julie Wersal of Trinidad, CO, his sons, James (and Kim) Wersal of Montrose, CO and David (and Graca) Wersal of Lakeville; granddaughters, Brianna and Makayla Wersal of Lakeville; brother, Harold (and Mary) Wersal of Morgan, sisters, Mary Ann (and Leo) Veit of New Ulm, Lucille (and Lloyd Johnson) Hacker of Morgan, and Madonna (and Albert) Ebnet of Springfield; brothers-in-law, Walter Tomschin of Springfield, John (and Mildred) Tomschin of Minneapolis, and Louie (and Phyllis) Tomschin of Alden; sisters-in-law, Ann (and Bud) Holmberg of Minneapolis, Alice (and Dennis) Shumway of Heron Lake and Dorothea Tomschin of Springfield; in addition many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, sisters, Irene Groebner and Evelyn Kastner, brother, William Wersal Jr, brothers-in-law, Charlie Tomschin, Ben Tomschin, Clarence Tomschin and sister-in-law, Viola Miller. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Sunday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and at St. John Lutheran Church on Monday from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM . Funeral services will be held November 8, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Dave Klawiter officiating. Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery in Owatonna with honors provided by Steele County Military Funeral Unit. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Twin Cities, 10405 6th Ave. N. Suite 250, Plymouth, MN 55441.
