Obituary

On October 30, 1947, Lester D. Enzenauer was born in Owatonna, MN to Alfred and Marjorie (Bull) Enzenauer. He would be the 7th child to the couple, eventually being joined by a younger brother. By all accounts, Lester had a typical childhood. Growing up on North Street, he had many friends and like typical boys there were shenanigans. Another part of his typical American childhood was when he began being a paperboy for The Owatonna People's Press. Even at that young age, Lester had a work ethic that would follow him through his life. Lester graduated from Owatonna High School in 1966 and would begin working. At one time he lived in Minneapolis but eventually moved home to Owatonna and began working at The Owatonna Canning Company. In 1972, one of Lester's friends and his friend's mother would set up a blind date between Lester and a girl who worked at Federated. The two introverts, Lester and Sandra, would have their first date and something clicked. The night Lester planned on proposing to Sandra, her uncle had a heart attack. So, at first, she said, NO! That was soon corrected, however, and on November 25, 1972, Lester Enzenauer and Sandra Gwinn would marry in Austin at St. Olaf Church. Both of their mothers did not think they would last a year, but they would prove them wrong many times over as they stayed married until Sandra died in 2009. Lester and Sandra were joined by daughter, Kari, in 1973 and then daughter, Amanda, in 1977. Things weren't always easy, due to different circumstances. He would never NOT do anything, though. He had a family to take care of, so he would always make sure they were taken care of. Eventually, after obtaining his Associate degree from Austin Vo-Tech, he was hired by a company in Clear Lake, IA, and his family would end up in Hawarden, IA. In 2002, a decision was made to return to Minnesota, and they would move back to Owatonna. Even after the death of Sandra, he would work part-time at Hy-Vee in the deli. Eventually though, things began changing with him and he officially retired full-time. In July 2019, he would be diagnosed with dementia. In August, the diagnosis was changed to Alzheimer's. His daughter, Kari, made the decision to have him take up residence at Timberdale Trace. There, he would win the hearts of the staff and administrators. He would also share the sweet dulcet tones of Led Zeppelin and other bands from the era. Rock on Dad! On March 26th, Lester passed away with Kari at his bedside, remaining strong until the end. Lester is survived by his daughter, Kari of Owatonna; sister, Margaret (and Butch) Baumann of Waseca; brothers, James (and Sharon) of Preston and Donald (and Evelyn) of St. Ansgar, IA; and many nieces and nephews. Along with the human family members, Lester is survived by the family cats, especially, "his" cat, Blacky. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra; daughter, Amanda; parents, Alfred and Marjorie Enzenauer; infant sister, Lola Pearl; sisters, Jeannette and Helen and brothers, Kenneth and Arthur. A graveside service will be held on April 13, 2020, at 11:00 AM at Owatonna Memorial Gardens.
