Obituary

Lloyd Zolnowsky, 92, passed away peacefully at Homestead House in Owatonna on Monday, June 18, 2012. Prior to his time at Homestead, he made his home at The Brooks in Owatonna. Lloyd was born in Dante, South Dakota on April 9, 1920 to Edward and Josephine Zolnowsky, the fifth of seven children. The family moved to the Wagner, SD area and Lloyd completed the 8th grade in rural schools before becoming a fulltime worker on the family farm. In 1938 Lloyd traveled to the Medford/ Owatonna area because he heard stories of the rich farmland available. He was hired as a farm hand and later owned land and farmed in Merton township for many years. In 1944 Lloyd married Mary Skalicky. They raised three children on the farm before moving into Owatonna in 1971. He worked in the OTC Die Shop until he retired. Lloyd was involved in many community activities: Farm Bureau, Gilt Edge Dairy Association, Merton Telephone Company, Knights of Columbus, RSVP, Senior Place, SEMCAC, Civil Defense, 4-H, original committee to form the OTC Credit Union and many others too numerous to mention. In 1990, Lloyd was the recipient of the Sertoma 'Service to Mankind' award. The activity that Lloyd enjoyed most was making music and sharing it with others. He and his 'Czechmates' band thrilled people from Minnesota to Arizona and points in between for nearly 50 years, playing at nursing homes, clubs, birthday and anniversary celebrations and the Steele County Fair. He had the gift of 'playing by ear' and never learned to actually read music. He was also never truly at ease speaking in front of a crowd, but over came that because he loved the music so much. Lloyd is survived by his children, JoAnn Kaplan of Decorah, Iowa, Darrell (Mick) of Medford and Michael (Helen) of New Ringgold, PA. and one sister-in-law, Alice (George) Skalicky of St. Peter, MN. He also leaves five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents, four brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be Wednesday June 20, 2012 from 5-8 P.M. at Michaelson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Funeral service will be Thursday June 21, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Reverend John Sauer officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
