Obituary

After a short illness, Margaret Pauline Alger, 90, of Kenyon MN, died at home on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, with members of her family at her side. She had been under the care of the Faribault Hospice for several weeks. Margaret was born July 2, 1923, in Minot, North Dakota to Edward and Margaret (Stevens) Vardsveen. There she was raised and graduated from Minot High School in 1941. She was united in marriage to Edward Alger on November 11, 1943, in Minot. The couple made their home in Wells, MN where she worked for JC Penney and later for Peterson''s Department Store. They also lived in Sturgeon Bay, WI and Winona, MN. Margaret and Ed moved to Kenyon in 2003. Margaret enjoyed cooking and baking. She became well known for her chocolate chip cookies which she generously shared with friends and family alike. She often sent several jars of cookies with her son Steve, to share with the girls'' basketball team that he coached. We will all miss the "Cookie Lady" very much. Margaret also enjoyed playing card games and dominos with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her five children: Steve (and Karen) Alger of Kenyon, MN; Greg (and Mary) Alger of Wells, MN; Jeff (and Sally) Alger of Scottsdale, AZ; Dave Alger of Sparta, WI; and Karen (and Paul) DeJardine of Sturgeon Bay, WI. She was blessed with 16 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Margaret is also survived by her sister, Betty (and Bob) Edwards of Edina. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Edward Alger in 2010, her parents, and seven brothers and sisters. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenyon. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014, at 11:00 AM at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with Intern Pastor Wade Reddy officiating. Memorials are preferred to the Faribault Hospice or First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon, Minnesota.
