Marlys Ann Medvec, age 95, passed away on September 29, 2026, at Benedictine Living Community in Owatonna, MN.

Marlys was born on June 19, 1931, to Roy and Mabel Miller in Minneapolis, MN. She attended Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, where she met her future husband, Tom Medvec, in the percussion section of the orchestra. They graduated in 1949 and were married in Minneapolis on Sept. 12, 1953. Marlys worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company’s accounting department, while Tom attended the University of Minnesota.

They were stationed in Fort Lee, Virginia, from 1954-1956, and returned to Minneapolis upon Tom’s discharge from the Army. After Tom’s job transfers to Omaha and North Platte, NE, they settled in West Des Moines, IA, to raise their two sons, Craig and Brad. Marlys worked as a school secretary at Fairmeadows Elementary School from 1971 -1988.

Marlys and Tom were faithful members of St. Mark Lutheran Church since 1962 and active members of Echo Valley Country Club for 38 years. They also enjoyed following the Iowa Hawkeyes and were football season ticket holders for over 50 years, tailgating with close friends for many years. Marlys was known for her pie-baking, and her Minnesota grandchildren called her the “Cookie Grandma.”

Tom and Marlys relocated to Minnesota in 2022, due to their declining health.

Marlys is survived by her two sons, Craig (Peggy) Medvec of Naperville, IL, and Brad (Holly) Medvec of Owatonna, MN; six grandchildren, Kristen (Kyle) Hammann, Katie (Michael) Klamo, Connor Medvec, Blake (McKenzie Holton) Medvec, Austin (Alexis) Medvec, and Megan Medvec (fiancé Colton Havelka); six great-grandchildren, Tess & Tori Hammann, Joel & Lanie Klamo, and Wrenley & Oaklynn Medvec; a sister, Nancy Gaston of Savage, MN, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Tom, her parents, and a sister-in-law, Carol Jean Fowler.

Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna, MN, is assisting the family with arrangements. A private family service will be held, with burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
