Marshall M. Olson, 65, died of natural causes at his home in Apple Valley. Marshall was born June 6, 1944 in Waseca, Minnesota the son of Milton and Margaret (Sotebeer) Olson. He graduated from Waseca High School in 1962 and Mankato State University in 1966. In 1967 he enlisted in the Navy and was sent to the U.S. NTC in Great Lakes, IL. There he was a recruit petty officer chief in a music company and was a Blue Jacket in the choir. At Great Lakes he attended Basic Electricity and Electronics School and also Electronic Technician School. He then applied and was accepted to OCS in Newport, RI. On November 22, 1968 he graduated with the rank of ensign. After his first year, he was advanced to the rank of LTJG. He served on the USS Mispillion as the ship's navigator. The ship's main mission was to provide fuel to other ships around Vietnam. He was honorably discharged from active duty in August, 1971, but remained on reserve for several years. During his service he received many medals and commendations. He was very proud to have served his country in the Vietnam War. After being in the service, Marshall returned to graduate school for two years, majoring in math and computer science. He then became employed by Sperry-Univac to develop software. The company's name eventually changed to Unisys. He remained with the company until retirement. He then spent a few years doing contract work for TWA. Marshall enjoyed music, photography, fishing and golfing. His mother and father preceded him in death. His aunt, Delore Hill of Owatonna, and several cousins survive him. A graveside services will be held Friday August 28, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Woodville Cemetery, Waseca with Reverend Terry Quick officiating. Memorials are preferred to the donor''s choice.
