Martha Albina Sommer, 100, of Owatonna, died Sunday, January 16, 2011 at Cedarview Care Center. Martha was born on January 6, 1911 in Owatonna, the daughter of Albert and Mary (Kvasnicka) Kruger. She was united in marriage to Gordon W. Sommer on October 1, 1930 in Owatonna. Martha and Gordon farmed near Pratt for 34 years and moved to Owatonna in 1971. In 1954, she began working at the Owatonna Canning Company, retiring in 1976. Martha loved traveling with her friends and family and toured with local senior groups whenever possible. She also enjoyed watching people, gardening, making crafts, and scrapbooking. Martha was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where she was active in adult forum and was an honorary member of the alter guild. She is survived by daughters, Lorraine (and Delmer 'Bob') Reynolds of Brandon, Betty Jean Caswell of Faribault; son, Gordon (and Marlys) Sommer of Owatonna; sister, Dorothy Springer of Owatonna; 12 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 7 step-great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by her husband Gordon, who passed away in 1989; and sister, Caroline Wendt. Visitation will be held Saturday, January 22, from 10am to 11am at St. John Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held at St. John Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 22, 2010 at 11am with Pastor Dave Klawiter officiating. Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery in Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to St. John Lutheran Church or donor's choice.
