Melanchthon "Mel" Daniel Froehlich, 90, of Kenyon, died Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Timberdale Trace in Owatonna.
He was born July 22, 1930 in Elk River, Minnesota the son of Samuel and Neta (Stark) Froehlich. He grew up on a farm in the Franklin area and attended country school through the eighth grade. He then began helping on the farm. On November 7, 1953, he married Jane Crawford at Swedlanda Lutheran Church near Hector, MN.
Mel was drafted into the United States Army in November, 1954. He served in Korea until his discharge in 1956. He and Jane then moved to a farm in the Kenyon area and began his career in farming. Along with farming, he was a Pioneer Seed dealer from 1973 to 1980.
Mel enjoyed bowling and participated on the Twin Cities TV Show "Bowling for Dollars". He and Jane enjoyed taking several motorcycle trips and were members of the Christian Motorcycle Group. He also enjoyed woodworking and made several chests for grandchildren and others and also blessed many with his paintings. Mel had time to help anyone and everyone. He loved people and was a friend to everyone he came in contact with. Many people know him as a gentle and honest man. Most important to him was his family and he was always excited to have family and friends come over for parties and other gatherings. He especially enjoyed giving roses to Jane for no reason at all. She definitely was the love of his life. Even in his last hours, Mel couldn't take his eyes off her.
Mel was a current and faithful member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Aspelund, a former member of Hegre Lutheran Church and a member of the Gideons International.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Jane Froehlich of Kenyon; children, Judy (Wendell) Berg of Hillsboro, ND, Gene (Vickie) Froehlich of Kenyon and Susan (Tom) Dodds of Kenyon; grandchildren, Aaron (Angie) Berg of Portland, ND, Brian (Susie Paul-Hus) of Trios-Rivières, Québec, Melissa (Eric) Keller of Albany, NY, Andrea (Luke) Salik of Minneapolis, Kayla (Jeffrey) Burse of West Concord, Michael (Bethany) Froehlich of St. Paul, Sarah (Ian) Smyth of Rochester, Daniel (Jamie) Dodds of Lakeville and Bridget (Josh) Sands of Owatonna; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Alexis and Jacob Berg, Mélina Paul-Hus, Emma and Zachary Berg, Ethan, Elijah, Ainsley and Avonlea Keller, Gabriella Salik, Jackson Froehlich, Key-Lon Burse, Clark and Crosby Froehlich, Molly Wagner, Gabriel and Georgia Dodds, Melody Sands, Skye and Jayden Kirby and Zach Stromley; sister, Jeanette Borth of Faribault and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Neta; grandsons, Morris Dodds, Jr. and William Daniel Froehlich; and brothers and spouses, Victor (Luella), Samuel (LaVern), Ferris (Carol), Gary, and Alvin (Hazel) Froehlich.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon on Wednesday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM and at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Aspelund on Thursday from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. Funeral services will be held October 29, 2020 at 1:00 PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Aspelund with The Reverend Gideon Johnson officiating. Facemask and social distancing guidelines as mandated by the Governor will be observed at the visitation and funeral.
Interment will be in the Hegre Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kenyon with military honors by the Kenyon Color Guard.
