Michael Allen Hortop, 63, of Owatonna, died Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.
He was born July 11, 1955 in Owatonna the son of Duane and Beverly (Klecker) Hortop. Mike graduated from West Concord High School in 1973. On March 15, 1975 he married Patricia Chicos at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in West Concord. Mike worked as a contractor for Hortop Construction and Aspen Enterprises in the West Concord, Owatonna and Rochester areas.
Mike was a member of Rochester Area Builders Association, Owatonna Eagles and Lions Club of Dodge Center. He enjoyed fishing, boating and camping. Mike was a very competitive man that loved to play bean bags, washers, card games and road trips to the casinos. He also enjoyed watching sports and followed the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. Mike enjoyed grilling and making chili; often times believing that hotter is better. Mike loved his grandchildren and cherished the time he spent with them at sporting events.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Patty Hortop; children, Jennifer (and Junior) Peña of Kasson, Ryan Hortop of Mantorville, Laura (and Matt) Paulson of Rochester, Carter Hortop of Kasson; grandchildren, Alek Peña, Jaelyn Peña, Landen Hortop, Josslyn Hortop, Brooks Hortop, Sawyer Hortop, Caedyn Paulson, Camryn Paulson, Kaylee Hortop; mother, Beverly Hortop of Owatonna; sister, Cheryl (and Mike Wille) Kvittem of Faribault, Linda (and Steve) Bucher of West Concord; brother, Brad (and Beth) Hortop of Dodge Center; brother-in-law, Jim Holst of Medford and special friend, Kari Sletten of Owatonna. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Duane Hortop and his sister, Diane Holst.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Sunday from 2pm to 6pm and on Monday from 9:30am to 10:30am. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 15, 2019 at 10:30am at Michaelson Funeral Home with The Reverend Nancy Edwardson officiating. Interment will be in the Owatonna Memorial Gardens in Owatonna. Mike has always said, "It is what it is"
