Mrs. Jean Hanson, 90, of Owatonna, died Friday, March 4, 2016 at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona.
Jean was born September 13, 1925 in Humboldt, Iowa the daughter of Anton and Bess (VanHouten) Penning. She was a 1944 graduate of Humboldt High School. She received her commercial training at Humboldt County REA where she continued to work and met her future husband, Edward Hanson. They were married on January 16, 1946 in Bode, Iowa. In 1950, they moved to Owatonna and built their home in 1960 where she currently resided. Jean began her 27 year career at Federated Insurance starting as a messenger working her way up to underwriting. She took an early retirement in 1987 to care for her husband, Ed. Ed passed away in 1990. Jean returned to Federated Insurance in 1991 working part time in the accounting department for 14 years.
Jean was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1950 and served on the altar guild. She was a hospice volunteer for 13 years, an American Legion Auxiliary member for over 20 years, played on the bowling team, and enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.
She is survived by her two sons, Paul (and Paula) Hanson of Owatonna and Robert (and Rebecca) Hanson of Fallbrook, CA; her daughter, Ann Hanson of San Diego, CA; four grandchildren, Scott (and Christy) Hanson, Kathy Ruschmeyer, Amy (and Craig) Manderfeld, and Traci Hanson; seven great grandchildren, Whitney, Max, Faith, and Bella Hanson, Brady and Logan Ruschmeyer, and Bailey Manderfeld; two sisters, Louise Sayre of Ames, IA and Mary Lou Warner of Gilmore City, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; sister, Shirley Zenor.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Friday, March 11, 2016 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church with The Reverend Dean Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Owatonna Memorial Gardens in Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church Music Ministry Fund or Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund.
