Myron "Mike" L. Ellingsen, age 91, of Owatonna, died on Sunday, September 27, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Mike was born on the 10th of July 1929, in Two Harbors, to Sigurd and Myrtle (Wick) Ellingsen. He graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1947 and went to work for the United States Steel Corporation laboring in the roundhouse servicing the malloys that pulled the loads of iron ore from the Iron Range to the shipping docks in Two Harbors. After an enlistment in the National Guard, Mike was later honorably discharged as a Sgt. 1st Class, 5th Army. Immediately he met the love of his life, Rita Ann Jones from Duluth. Mike entered the University of Minnesota Duluth as a night school student. He graduated from the college with a business degree and minors in economics and english. Mike was recruited by the Owatonna Tool Company in Owatonna as a purchasing agent. He remained there for the next 24 years as a director of operations until his retirement. Mike thoroughly enjoyed his family and grandchildren, all 10 of them. In fact, that is where his e-mail address came from 10grand.etc, etc.
He was the true definition of leader in work, community and always providing the fortunate people surrounding him with life lessons. Mike was a man of honor and nobility. If you asked a hundred people who he was, you would hear the many different stories such as captain of industry, hockey coach, outdoors man. He was the father to five children and the Somoli family of eight next-door. Mike had a quick wit and was a kind soul. He will be missed terribly but his family is so proud to have been on his team, The Castle Danger Wildcats!
Mike is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rita Ellingsen of Owatonna; children, Mary (Jeff) Lind of Hillsboro, OR, Doug (Cindy) Ellingsen of Schofield, WI, Carole Hallman of Minneapolis, Lynn McCaffrey of Hillboro, OR and Jim (Shannon) Ellingsen of Bloomington; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Orville Ellingsen.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the Owatonna Foundation or to Allina Hospice.
