Obituary

Ora Gertrude Jeanette (Flom) Jacobson, 89, of Kenyon, died Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Kenyon Sunset Home after battling dementia. Ora was born November 18, 1920 on the family farm in Rice County. She is the daughter of Edward and Clara (Granley) Flom. She attended country school in Richland Township and attended Kenyon High School, graduating in 1938. Ora''s mother died shortly after she graduated so Ora decided to not attend nursing school but to continue living at home helping her dad and brothers with the farming and the household chores. She was united in marriage to Selmer Jacobson on June 24, 1942 at Moland Lutheran Church where she was also baptized and confirmed. They were married for sixty-years and lived and farmed in Holden Township for 50 years before moving into Kenyon. At the age of 60 she decided to take a job outside of the home. She worked a short while at Kid''s Duds in Cannon Falls and then at the Canning Factory in Kenyon during the corn pack. Selmer died in 2002. In August of 2008, after a stroke, Ora entered the Kenyon Sunset Home. In high school she was skilled in shorthand. She taught many years at Holden Lutheran Church as a Sunday school teacher, served as Ladies Aid President along with other positions and volunteered at the Kenyon Sunset Home. She was a long time 4-H member and leader that continued with her daughters and grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and helped on the farm by serving many a meal to family, threshing, and harvesting crews. Ora could make a great roast beef and a leftover hash enjoyed by her family (especially son-in-law Ron Haugen). Baking was a specialty too. Hundreds of bars and cakes were made for taking out to the field for haying and fieldwork. Ora was awarded first place for her apple crisp during Town and Country Days. She was a great seamstress. She made garments for 4-H projects, herself and daughters, as well as, flower girl and bridesmaid gowns. Lots of hours were spent making quilts and quilting with the Ladies Aid groups. Ora was always willing to help others and offer advice to her grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother as well as a good friend to many. She is survived by three daughters, Mary Louise (Ron) Vermillion of Elizabeth, CO; Barbara (Jon) Totten of Aurora, CO; Helen (Ron) Haugen of Kenyon; a sister, Belinda Carlson of Kenyon; two sisters-in-law, Marcia Hansen of Kenyon and Elaine Jacobson of Kenyon. She dearly loved and was so very proud of her five grandchildren, Kyle (Jenna) Haugen, Aaron (Terra) Haugen, Amanda (Brian) Pyfferoen, Shane Totten (Betsy Lambert) and Samuel Totten. Although she eventually was unable to say their names her seven great grandchildren are Cheyann, Adelynn and Mason Haugen, Audrey Haugen, and Emma, Hazley and Maddagen Pyfferoen. These seven special children would light up her face and life. She was also aware that Rachel and Ryley Pyfferoen were soon to arrive in the world and had commented 'Oh My'! Four step-grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren also survived her. Her husband Selmer, her parents and two brothers, Arthur and Edroy Flom, preceded her in death. Casket bearers are Kyle Haugen, Aaron Haugen, Amanda Pyfferoen, Brian Pyfferoen, Shane Totten, and Samuel Totten. Honorary casket bearers are a few of Ora''s childhood and faithful friends, cousins and especially her sister and sisters-in-law: Belinda Carlson, Marcia Hansen, Elaine Jacobson, Norma Jacobson, Mildred Lair, Doris Mundahl, Margaret Clemmons, Dolores Wrolstad, Catherine Friese.
