Obituary

OrVetta Adalyn Schroeder, 84, of Owatonna, died Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Sterling House of Owatonna. The daughter of John and Nettie (Kruckeberg) Standke, OrVetta A. Standke was born Aug. 4, 1926, in Somerset Township, Steele Co, Minnesota. She attended country school, District 57, in Somerset Township and later moved to Owatonna while attending high school. OrVetta graduated from Owatonna High School in 1945. She then worked for Jostens in Owatonna, and on Sept. 16, 1948, she married Harold D. Schroeder at St. John's American Lutheran Church, Owatonna. They made their home on their farm near Meriden where they grew crops and raised livestock and chickens. In 1961, they owned and operated Schroeder''s Cashway in Meriden and later, in 1965, the Meriden Grain Elevator, where OrVetta worked in customer service and bookkeeping. They retired in 1974 and remained on their farm. OrVetta was active in many groups, clubs and organizations as well as at her church. She was a 4-H food leader and a member of the Meriden Card Club for more than 50 years, the Woman''s Club and the Sew Happy Quilters. She was a volunteer at the Steele County Clothesline and also was co-chair of that organization for 10 years, Know Your Neighbor club and the Naomi Circle at St. Paul's Lutheran. She was also a Sunday School teacher for many years. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, baking and canning. OrVetta made more than 1,500 quilt tops for the church and many quilts for her family. She is survived by her husband, Harold D. Schroeder of Owatonna; a son, Gary (and Kathleen) Schroeder of Deer River, Minn.; three daughters, Cheryl (and Sam F.) Macalus of Maple Grove, Minn., Kathy (and Dan) Wett of Northfield, Minn. and Cindy (and Rock) Flury of Holmen, Wis.; three sisters, LaVonne Meixner of Owatonna, LaDonna (and Reuben) Ebeling of Owatonna and Arlene (and Ted) Sorensen of Owatonna; two brothers, John C. (and Bev) Standke of Owatonna and Dale (and Sue) Standke of Morristown, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, Betsy Schroeder, John Schroeder, Charlene Macalus, Christine (and Derek) Middleman, Sam J. Macalus (and Hannah Brown), Laura Wett (and Dwayne Watson), David Wett, Steven Wett, Michael (and Sarah) Flury, Tara Flury and James R. Flury. OrVetta also is survived by five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Myron Standke and his wife, Janette; brothers-in-law, George Meixner, Ervin Schroeder and his wife, Florence, and Wilfred Schroeder. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, April 28, at Michaelson Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, April 29, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Meriden Township with the Rev. Gary Rusinko officiating. Interment will be in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Meriden Township. Memorials to St. Paul''s Lutheran Church are preferred.
