Obituary

Otto "Mac" McKinstry, 86, of Owatonna, died Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the Owatonna Care Center. Otto was born March 29, 1927 in Treece, Kansas the son of Otto and Ruth (Mayfield) McKinstry. At the age of three he moved to Lanagan, Missouri where he graduated from high school. He served in the United States Navy during WWII later receiving his honorable discharge. He then attended John Brown University in Arkansas. After college he worked for the power company in Riverton, Kansas. Mac was united in marriage to Melba Henson on July 30, 1949 in Arkansas. In 1953, the couple moved to Minneapolis and there he worked as an electrical engineer for Honeywell. After three years he began working at Remington Rand UNIVAC as an engineer developing aeronautical and computers. In 1964 they moved to Owatonna where he worked as Production Manager for OPU at the power plant. He retired in 1986 due to illness. He was a member of the Eastern Star and a member of the Masons. He also served as Owatonna Lions Club President. Melba and Mac enjoyed traveling and camping throughout every state in the United States except for Alaska. The couple also traveled to Germany, the Bahamas and Bermuda. Otto is survived by his wife Melba McKinstry of Owatonna; son Robert (and Gloria) McKinstry of Lakeville; 12 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son William McKinstry. Visitation will be at First Baptist Church on Thursday, October 17, 2013 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Funeral services will be held Thursday October 17, 2013 at 10:30 AM at First Baptist Church with the Reverend Cindy Halvorson officiating. Interment will be in the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Military honors will be provided by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Arrangements by Michaelson Funeral Home.
