Owen Lars M. Musgjerd, 90, of Kenyon, Minnesota died Thursday, March 9, 2017 at Samaritan Bethany Home on Eighth in Rochester, Minnesota.
Owen was born February 27, 1927 in Kenyon, Minnesota the son of Olaus and Hjordis (Mork) Musgjerd. He attended District 54 Underdahl country school and graduated from Kenyon High School in 1945. Owen entered into the United States Army on October 2, 1946 and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan at the hospital as a clerk until his honorable discharge on February 24, 1948. After the service, he returned to Kenyon and married his childhood sweetheart Donna Nesseth on March 26, 1949 at the Vang Lutheran parsonage in Dennison. The couple made their home in Kenyon. Owen worked for the Pure Station, Kenyon Creamery, owned and operated the Standard Station, and was a southwest regional cigar salesman for E.B. Crabtree in Faribault. Owen and Donna also owned and operated H and M (Hukriede and Musgjerd) and then Owen's Fairway Grocery for over 25 years. After their retirement, Owen worked at the Kenyon Ag Service. They then moved to Rochester in 2008.
Owen enjoyed woodcarving, fishing, golfing, traveling, and their cats. After retirement, Owen and Donna would travel in their motorhome. They were members of the Winnebago Itasca Travelers, Southern Honkers, and Winnie Ha Ha Motorhome Club. Overall the couple made it to all 50 states, Mexico, and a trip out East to Vermont during the fall season. They would also travel during the winter months to Texas.
Owen was proud of his Norwegian heritage and was fortunate to travel to Norway twice where they'd visit family. He loved attending lutefisk dinners and enjoyed lefse. He was also known for his recipes of Swedish meatballs, pulsa, and cranberry relish, which he had available at his grocery store.
Owen was an active member of Holden Lutheran Church, lifetime member and past commander of Kenyon VFW, Kenyon Veteran's Colorguard, Commercial Club, Lions Club, 30 year plus volunteer fireman and past fire chief for Kenyon Fire Department. He was also instrumental in organizing the annual Memorial Parade in Kenyon and Smelt Feed.
He is survived by two daughters Diane (and Paul) Huseth of Rochester; Jean Musgjerd of Rochester; son David Musgjerd of Northfield; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sister, Marie Mya Erickson of Austin; sister-in-law, Hazel Musgjerd of Kenyon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna Musgjerd; brother, Lloyd Musgjerd.
Visitation will be at Holden Lutheran Church on Friday, March 17, 2017 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 17, 2017 at 12:30 PM at Holden Lutheran Church, Kenyon with The Reverend Heather Culuris officiating. Interment will be in the Holden Lutheran Cemetery in Kenyon with military honors conducted by the Kenyon Veterans Color Guard. Memorials are preferred to Holden Lutheran Church, Kenyon Veterans Color Guard, or Kenyon Fire Department. Arrangements by Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon.
