Obituary

Portia Mae Johnson, 92, of Owatonna, died Sunday, October 3, 2021 at Homestead Hospice House. She was born May 25, 1929 in Graceville, Minnesota the daughter of Clarence and Lucita (Cramer) Johanson. She grew up on a farm and attended country school. She participated in 4-H, and as a leader and champion won a trip representing Minnesota in Washington D.C. She graduated from Wheaton High School in 1946. She continued her education at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in music and minor in education and home economics. On June 11, 1950 she married Stanley M. Johnson in Wheaton, MN. In addition to raising five children, Portia was a gifted musician with perfect pitch. She started teaching piano while in high school, and taught for 60 years before retiring in 2003. Portia also played organ in the churches where Stan served as pastor; Kasota Presbyterian, First Presbyterian Church of Crookston and the Associated Church in Owatonna. In retirement, she took violin lessons, participated in bell choir, worked on composing more seriously, and enjoyed many trips to Scandinavia with Stanley. Portia was a founding member of the Owatonna Keyboard Guild (now known as the Music Guild of Owatonna), a member of the PEO Sisterhood since 1947, an active member of the Minnesota Music Teachers Association from 1965 to 2003, active in AAUW in Crookston, and was always active in the life of her churches. Along with music, Portia enjoyed growing flowers indoors and outdoors, and sewing unique clothing for family and herself. She is survived by her children, Dr. Daniel (Ruth) Johnson of Fridley, Lowell Johnson of Owatonna, Dr. Beryl Allison Esther of Eagan, Andrea (Brian) Johnson of Owatonna and Dr. Matthew (Karin) Johnson of Lund, Sweden; grandchildren, Kristina Cummings, Amy (Dan) Bauer, Brett (Reagan) Dregge, Liz Bush (Michelle Derman-Berger), Mark (Jess) Johnson, Cathy Johnson, Fredrik Johnson, and Anders Johnson; and great-grandchildren: Norah Dregge, Ryott Bauer, Lucy Bauer, and Wesley Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Lucita; husband, Rev. Stanley Johnson and brother Peyton Johanson. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on October 19th from 4:00 - 7:00 PM and at Associated Church on October 20th from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. A Memorial Service will be held on October 20, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Associated Church with Reverend Coqui Conkey and Pat Postlewaite officiating.
