Raymond Oren Colwell, 81, of Owatonna, died Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Homestead Hospice House. He was born October 30, 1927 in South St. Paul the son of Raymond E. and Maude (Brown) Colwell. Raymond graduated from South St. Paul High School in 1946. He graduated from Winona State Teachers College in 1950 and received his Masters of Science degree from Mankato State College in 1958. He served in the US Air Force in San Angelo, TX and Fairbanks, AK from 1951 to 1955. He continued his service in the reserves for four years. While he was in the service, Ray married Melda Person June 22, 1952 in Monticello. Ray taught English and Art for public schools in Benson and Owatonna. He retired in 1993. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church serving on the Worship and Arts Committee. He was also a member of MEA, NEA, SEREA, OEA and Retired Art Teachers of Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, Melda Colwell of Owatonna; sons, Peter (and Stephanie) Colwell of Minneapolis, Andrew Colwell of Medford; grandchildren, Tessa, Tia, Tate, Christopher, Cassandra; sister, Elizabeth (and Davis) Chamberlin of Austin and nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by 5 sisters and 1 brother Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4pm to 7pm and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Thursday from 12pm to 1pm. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 1:00pm at Trinity Lutheran Church with The Reverend Dean Smith officiating. Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery in Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to Owatonna Area Hospice Patient Care Fund, Homestead Hospice House or Trinity Lutheran Church.
