Richard Lowelle Gulickson, 73, of Owatonna, died Thursday, May 12, 2011, at his home. He was born December 16, 1937 in Kasson, Minnesota the son of Gulick and Vera (Ruport) Gullickson. He attended school in Dodge Center. Dick left home at the age of 13 and went to work for brothers Lester and Russell on their farms in the Pine Island area. In 1955, at the age of 17, he went into the US Army serving seven years in Germany and two 18 month tours in Vietnam. He left military service in 1975 after serving his country for 20 years. He began his second career for Mayo Clinic at Methodist Hospital in Rochester. On April 21, 1988, Dick was united in marriage to Joanne Hallette at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Rochester. In that marriage they combined their six children into a newly blended family. Within the first year they moved to Owatonna where Joanne originated from. Dick retired from Mayo Clinic in 1999 after 23 years of service. He also worked several short term jobs after retirement, including SPX, Cybex and for R S Vans. He was an avid bowler and bowled with his Biers Apartments team for 20 years. He also played golf with his friends and enjoyed his annual fishing trip with the guys. He enjoyed deer hunting and looked forward to camping with The Jacks and Jokers camping club. He and Joanne were avid Minnesota Viking fans, enjoying 14 years as season ticket holders. Dick's constant source of pride was the activities his 21 grandchildren included him in. He spent many hours at sporting and musical events. Dick was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church since 1989. He served on the property and maintenance committee and helped mow the church lawn for the past several years. He was a volunteer board member for Ivanhoe Apartments for six years and served on the board of directors for Cedar Cove for three years. Dick was a lifetime member of the VFW. He drove for Meals on Wheels, volunteered at Healthy Seniors and was a member of Senior Place. He was always willing to help anyone who needed his assistance. Dick's love and care of animals brought a smile to everyone's face. He spent his battle with cancer with Vike (the cat) at his side He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Joanne Gulickson of Owatonna; children, Theresa Gulickson Phillips of El Reno, OK; Richard (and Jamie) Gulickson of El Reno, OK; Rebecca (and David) Hallette Phillips of Owatonna; Major Gary (and Summer) Gulickson of Landstuhl, Germany; Robert (and Mandi) Gulickson of Mustang, OK; Angela Gulickson of Rochester; two sisters, Avis Spilde of Owatonna; Phyllis Elias of Zumbrota; 21 grandchildren, Kassie, Dustin, Ashley and Kimberley Phillips; Christopher, Heather, McKinzi, and Ty Gulickson, Brookelyn, Dana and Michael Costin; Gabriel and Genevieve Phillips; Corah, Colan and Isabelle Gulickson; Emma and Aden Gulickson; and Alexander, Takyra and Makayha Gulickson; brother-in-law, Lyle (and Beth) Srsen of Sutter Creek, CA; sister-in-law, Annette Sasser of Blooming Prairie; step-brother, Herb Peterson of Boise, ID; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Blanche Growden; step-sister Judy Staffon; three brothers, Lester and his wife, Delores Gullickson; Russell and his wife Catherine Gullickson; Gerald and his wife Phyllis Gulickson; and a brother-in-law, Loyd Sasser. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Sunday, May 15, 2011 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the church. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 16, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with The Reverend Karl Korbel and The Reverend Ron Gilthvedt officiating. Interment will be in the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Military honors will be provided by the Steele Co. Military Funeral Unit. Memorials are preferred to Our Savior''s Lutheran Church, Hospice House, Senior Place, the American Cancer Society or donor''s choice.
