Obituary

Richard 'Dick' Marshall, 87, of Owatonna, died Monday, December 14, 2009 at Cedarview Care Center. Dick was born October 27, 1922 in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of Roy and Marie Marshall. He was raised in Grand Rapids and there he attended school He entered into the United States Marines in 1941 and served during WWII until 1946. After his honorable discharge, he worked for his uncle at Sherwin Williams in Grand Rapids. He was united in marriage to Betty Grunwald on May 7, 1945 in North Carolina. Dick was called from the reserves and served during the Korean Conflict. At that time, Betty moved to Owatonna. After his discharge in 1951, Dick moved to Owatonna. That same year, he began his career as a police officer for the City of Owatonna. He later earned the rank of Sergeant and later Juvenile Officer. He retired in 1976. He then went to work at Duffy''s Grocery and later worked as a bailiff for Steele County. He was involved with the school patrol, Stranger Danger and Mike, The Talking Bike, taking it to area schools and instructing children on bike safety. He began golfing after his retirement and he also bowled on many leagues. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Elks Club. He served as an usher and was a member at Trinity Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife Betty Marshall of Owatonna; two sons, Doug (and Pat) Marshall of Rochester; Brad (and Debbie) Marshall of Owatonna; two grandsons, Eric (and Reyna) Marshall, and Matthew Marshall; three great grandchildren, Christian, Nora and Ella; three brothers, Marvin, LeRoy and Ralph, a sister, Roberta and a sister-in-law, Pat. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Owatonna on Wednesday, December 16 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the church. Memorial services will be held Thursday, December 17 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church with The Reverend John Lestock officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Owatonna. Military honors will be provided by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church or to the donor''s choice.
