Robert Louis Rettenmaier, 68, died Friday, Nov. 14 at the Owatonna Hospital after a long struggle with numerous health problems resulting from a surgery in June 2007. He became the first state champion from that high school when, in 1958, he broke the state record in the 880 yard run. He also served in the US Army from 1963-1965 and later attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. While living and working in Minneapolis, he met his wife Kathy in 1977. They were married in 1978, and shortly after, they moved to Owatonna, where they have lived ever since. Robert joined the sales staff at Truth Inc. in 1982 and over the course of his 26 years there, received numerous sales awards. He has been a Knights of Columbus member all of his adult life and an ELKS member since 1979, and through these memberships and his work life, he became a well-known and well-respected member of the community. His interests included reading, playing cards with friends, and traveling with his wife. He could also often be seen on the golf course, where he always loved to be, even if he didn''t break 90.
