Obituary

Rodney Craig Block, 71, of Owatonna, died Friday, February 23, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born November 20, 1946 in Owatonna the son of Edward and Deloris (Deck) Block. Rod graduated Owatonna High School in 1965. While in high school, Rod enjoyed playing hockey. His team, coached by Ken Austin, made it to nationals. He bought his first Cushman Scooter at age 15 and his son Craig recently found it and bought it as a gift for his dad. Rod served in the US Army from 1965 - 1967. On April 4, 1970 he married Judy Grunwald at First Baptist Church in Owatonna. Rod worked at Block Plumbing and Heating with his dad. He then worked a short time at Hormel before becoming a carpenter with Jones Construction. Rod ended his career with Owatonna Public Utilities working in the gas and water division. Rod was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He loved old cars and enjoyed being a member of the Old Goats Car Club and the Night Owls Car Club. He also belonged to MSRA. Rod also loved washing and detailing his cars and motorcycle and taking cruises along the river. Although family was always first, friends were very important to Rod. He made sure to have coffee and visit any chance he could. Tuesday morning coffee at Wagner's Lunch and Wednesday mornings at Burger King were always a priority for Rod. He is survived by his wife, Judy Block of Owatonna; daughter, Tami (and Scott) Roberts of Faribault; son, Craig (and Melissa) Block of Faribault; grandchildren, Hayley Block, Dillon Jones, Jacob Roberts, Kayla Roberts; parents, Edward and Deloris Block of Owatonna; brother, Todd (and Mary) Block of St Peter; brother-in-law, Allan (and Norma) Grunwald of Owatonna and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Steven Block. Memorial services with Kyle Vock officiating will be held Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 2pm at Michaelson Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service.
