Roger Allan Olson, 77, of Kenyon, died Thursday, October 17, 2013 at his home in Kenyon. He was born November 6, 1935 in Hawley, MN, Clay County, the son of William N. and Esther (Peterson) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at Hawley Lutheran Church. He attended elementary school and graduated from Hawley High School in 1953. He graduated from Concordia College in 1957, attended the University of Minnesota and received a Master''s Degree from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. He married Maurine Alma Eiken on June 8, 1957 at St. Paul''s Lutheran Church in Bertha, MN. Roger served as high school biology and physical education teacher and football coach at Butterfield-Odin High School; high school principal and driver''s education instructor at Gary, MN; high school principal at Brooten-Belgrade; high school principal, classroom teacher and driver's ed instructor at Kenyon; he also coached junior high girls basketball, track, and cross country. He later taught out of the Minnesota Highway Safety and Research Center (St. Cloud State University) the Driver Improvement Program for drivers over 55 for Kenyon-Wanamingo Community Education. Roger enjoyed reading, (non-fiction, Civil War, World War I, travel), photography, fishing, traveling, (all 50 states), National Parks, and the lake cabin NW of Park Rapids. He took great joy in his annual fishing trip fly-in to Howey Bay, Ontario, Canada. Roger was a member and usher at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, held memberships and served as officer in Sons of Norway, Lion''s Club, Faribault Pilot''s Association, SE and MN Principal''s Association, named honorary member of Kenyon FFA. He was a member of Kenyon Ambulance (15 years) and American Red Cross, especially post-Hurricane Katrina, which deeply influenced his life. He is survived by his wife, Maurine Olson of Kenyon; four sons, David (Amy) Olson of Cold Spring, Mark Olson of Twin Valley, Paul Olson of Blooming Prairie, and John Olson of Kenyon; ten grandchildren, Ryan, Michaela, Lucas, Elijah Olson, Evan, Cameron, Collier, Gyhre Olson, Kyle Olson, and Orion Olson; two great-grandsons, Vincent and Albert; two great-granddaughters, Bella and Aubrey; brother, Earl Olson of Colfax, ND; brother-in-law, John (Nanette) Eiken of Delano; nephews, Daron Olson, Todd (Julie) Eiken, Shawn (Dena) Eiken; nieces, Kathy (Mike) Goldberg, Tracy Latta He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Marian Cunningham Wilder, daughter-in-law, Stacy Olson, and sister-in-law, Arla Olson. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kenyon on Monday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 21, 2013 at 11:00 AM at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kenyon with The Reverend Luther Mathsen officiating. Interment will be in the Kenyon Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to First Evangelical Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross, or donor''s choice.
