Ronald Haugen, 60, of Kenyon died May 4, 2016, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
Ron grew up in Wanamingo and attended school there. At the age of nine Ron was nicknamed Worms by one of his father's coworkers. Through his school years his friends stretched that into Wormy which has been with him ever since. To this day some people still don't know his real name which he found amusing. Though his family was always to call him Ron never Wormy. As he continued through school he grew to be a tall, strong man. He found a love of basketball and a mentor by the name of Gary Addington. Coach played an important part in his life, whom he credits with many life long skills in and out of the gym. Wanamingo was fortunate to have an outstanding team in 1974, before schools were split into divisions. Their team played Waseca, won the game and went on to play Northfield. Northfield was the loss that kept them from going to the state tournament. Ron loved his teammates like brothers and still are very close to them today. Ron was honored to be one of speakers at Addington's retirement dinner.
After graduation Ron went to Inver Hills College for one year and then returned to Wanamingo working at the local elevator reacquainting himself with physical work and a loving community. Ron worked many jobs Kielmeyer Construction, Cenex, Dave's Soil Service, owning his own semi tractor and trailer hauling grain and over the road loads. One of Ron's other loves was working for farmers in the fall and combining for them. All these jobs were setting him up for the job he loved for 27 years. In September of 1976 he attended the state fair where he met Helen Jacobson. One year later they were married at Holden Lutheran Church and had the first wedding dance at the Quamingo Roller Rink. Ron and Helen were blessed with three children, Kyle, Aaron and Amanda.
As leaving town on a Sunday night he looked in his rear view mirror to see three small kids crying and clinging to Helen. He decided he would give up the trucking life. A chance to interview with the Metropolitan Airport Commission lead Ron to his job he was made for. He started shoveling snow and worked his way up to running the largest snow blower at the airport. From there he became a forty niner running every piece of equipment the airport had. Finally an opportunity lead him into the office as assistant supervisor of field maintenance. This young hard working, fun loving family man from Wanamingo worked with many contractors and engineers over the years, always known as Wormy. Part of the reason he left to go into the office was to make sure the voice of the working men on his crews were heard. He loved the airport , his family and was a very happy man. Ron retired from the MAC in February of 2011. During these years the children married and have blessed Ron and Helen with Fifteen grandchildren. He loved his large family and enjoyed playing with them, giving them rides in the golf cart and attending their school activities.
