Shirley J. Hill, 73, of Owatonna, died Saturday, February 13, 2010 at Homestead Hospice House. Shirley was born March 29, 1936 in Fairmont, MN the daughter of Ernest and Amanda (Redmann) Johnson who lived on a farm near Mt. Lake. Shirley graduated from Mt. Lake High School in 1954. She was united in marriage to Darryl Hill on June 27, 1959 at the First Congregational Church in Mankato. She graduated with honors from Mankato State Teachers College with majors in English and Social Studies and a minor in Library Science. Shirley was a member of Who''s Who in Colleges and Universities in 1958. She taught students in Austin, Worthington, Mankato and retired in 1996 as the Medford School Librarian. The couple moved to Owatonna in 1968 when her husband was hired as Assistant High School Principal. She was president of her Chapter DZ of P.E.O. sisterhood, a member of The Associated Church and Circle, and was the Sunday school media specialist for 23 years. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, MEA, NEA and Owatonna Area Retired Teachers Association. She has volunteered for Meals-On-Wheels for many years. Together they raised two children who graduated from Owatonna High School. Shirley will be remembered for her gentle and kind manner with children and adults. She loved playing games with her children and grandchildren. The couple have camped their entire 50 years of marriage and have traveled throughout the U.S. in their travel trailer. They have also traveled abroad. Shirley was a woman of courage and strength who never complained about her adversity, but was always more concerned about others. She had a passion for eating ice cream, enjoyed cats, books, bridge, bowling, cards, watching the Olympics and serving others. Her examples on how to live and dies have touched many people and her spirit will live on forever. She is survived by her husband, Darryl, her daughter, Jane (and Peter) Hatton Jr., of Double Oak, TX; her son, Brent Hill and his girlfriend, Gena Shun of Savage, MN; Grandchildren include, Peter Hatton III, Phillip Hatton and Maddie Hill; a daughter-in-law and Maddie''s mother, Elizabeth Goodhue. She also left behind a sister-in-law, Dixie (and Dick) Benge of Motley, MN; her cousins and their families, neighbors and many friends who have supported her for many, many months. She was preceded in death by her parents, Amanda and Ernest A. Johnson from Mt. Lake and Darryl''s parents, Josephine and Rex Hill from Mankato. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the church. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 11:00 AM at The Associated Church with Dr. Ronald D. Wilson officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Cemetery, Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to the Associated Church, Parkinson Association of MN, Homestead Hospice House for Patient Care and Beautification, CaringBridge.org, or Donor''s choice.
