Verna B. Slezak, 95, of Owatonna, passed away Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Homestead Hospice House. Verna was born August 15, 1916 in Steele County the daughter of Fred and Nettie (Rhodes) Nass. She lived all her life in Steele County. She attended country school, District 10-Crane Creek, and graduated from Owatonna High School. She then worked for SL Department Store for 26 years. She enjoyed her job very much. Verna retired in 1983. Verna did volunteer work at St. John Lutheran Church for ten years and also volunteered at the Steele County Food Shelf for nine years. She loved to read library books and baking. Her passion was sewing clothes, crafts and most of all, quilts. She made dozens for her family. She was a member of the Owatonna Women''s Club. She is survived by a daughter, Jackie (and Paul) Pedrow of Balsam Township in the Grand Rapids area; a son, Dan (and Nancy) Wolesky of Big Lake; her grandchildren, John Pedrow of Minneapolis; Daniel Pedrow of Colorado; Mark Wolesky of Big Lake; Jennifer Wolesky (and Scott Shipstad) of Deephaven; and three great grandchildren. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Nettie Nass; two brothers, Ralph Nass and Irving Nass; four sisters, Mildred Hankerson; Blanche Gedosch; Merel Whiteis; and Ruby Fell. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Michaelson Funeral Home with The Reverend John Weisenburger officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to the Owatonna Public Library for big print books or Homestead Hospice House.
